Spend 5 minutes memorizing the two stability orders: Carbocation (3° > 2° > 1° > ) and carbanion ( > 1° > 2° > 3°) — knowing these two sequences answers 40% of direct GOC questions.
-
For hyperconjugation questions: Count the number of C-H bonds on the carbon(s) directly adjacent (alpha) to the cationic center or double bond. That count = number of hyperconjugative structures. No need for complex reasoning.
-
For electronic effect questions: First classify the group as purely σ-based (inductive only: alkyl, halogens) or conjugated (mesomeric: groups with lone pairs or π bonds attached directly to the ring/conjugated system). Then assign + or - for each applicable effect.
-
For IUPAC naming: Always write out the longest chain first, number from both ends, and assign the locant set that gives the lowest number to the principal functional group. Write SMILES mentally — if SMILES is simple, naming is straightforward.
-
For isomerism questions: Use a two-step checklist. (1) Is the molecular formula the same? If yes, (2) is the connectivity the same? If no → structural isomer; if yes → stereoisomer. For geometrical isomerism, verify both conditions.
-
For bond fission / intermediate type: If the question involves UV light, heat, or nonpolar solvents → homolytic → radicals. If it involves polar solvents, strong acids, or the question asks about carbocations → heterolytic.
-
Time allocation: GOC questions take 30–60 seconds each if you have memorized the stability orders and electronic effect groups. Allocate saved time to longer mechanism questions in later organic chapters.
-
Trap awareness: Always check if a question about "stability order" is asking for cations or anions. The word "carb-ocation" versus "carb-anion" is the key — reverse your answer accordingly.
-
Previous year pattern: Questions from 2019–2024 repeatedly test (i) stability order of carbocations/carbanions, (ii) +M vs -M classification, and (iii) hyperconjugation structure count. These three alone account for most direct GOC NEET questions.
