Spring Cutting — The Inverse Proportionality Rule

by Notetube Official84 words6 views

When a spring of constant kk and natural length LL is cut into pieces of lengths L1L_1 and L2L_2, the new spring constants are k1=kL/L1k_1 = kL/L_1 and k2=kL/L2k_2 = kL/L_2. The product kLkL (the stiffness per unit length) is a material property. Shorter pieces are stiffer. If cut into nn equal parts, each part has spring constant nknk. If cut in ratio m:nm:n, the constants are k(m+n)/mk(m+n)/m and k(m+n)/nk(m+n)/n respectively. This is one of the most frequently tested concepts in JEE SHM problems.
