1. Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) — Caustic Soda
Castner-Kellner Cell (Mercury Process):
- Electrolyte: Brine (NaCl solution)
- Cathode: Mercury (Hg) — Na deposits, forms Na-Hg amalgam
- Anode: Graphite — Cl2 evolved
- Denuder chamber: 2Na(amalgam) + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2 + Hg (Hg recycled)
Chlor-Alkali Process (modern alternative):
NaCl+H2OelectrolysisNaOH+21Cl2+21H2
2. Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3) — Washing Soda
Solvay Process (3 steps):
- NaCl+NH3+CO2+H2O→NaHCO3↓+NH4Cl
(NaHCO3 precipitates — less soluble)
- 2NaHCO3ΔNa2CO3+CO2↑+H2O
- 2NH4Cl+Ca(OH)2→CaCl2+2NH3↑+2H2O (NH3 recycled)
Net reaction: 2NaCl + CaCO3 → Na2CO3 + CaCl2
3. Sodium Bicarbonate (NaHCO3) — Baking Soda
- Prepared as intermediate in Solvay process
- Decomposition: 2NaHCO3ΔNa2CO3+CO2+H2O
- Uses: Antacid (neutralizes HCl), baking (CO2 leavening), fire extinguisher
4. Sodium Chloride (NaCl) — Rock Salt
- From sea water evaporation or rock salt mining
- Feedstock for Castner-Kellner and Solvay processes
- Uses: Food preservation, chlor-alkali industry
