A set is a well-defined collection of distinct objects (elements). Notation: roster form {1, 2, 3}, set-builder form {x : x is prime and x < 10}. The empty set has no elements. Key symbols: element-of, subset, proper subset, universal set U. Two sets are equal if they have exactly the same elements (order and repetition don't matter).
