The Systematic Elimination Method
When NEET gives you a set of features and asks you to identify the phylum or class, follow this decision tree:
Vertebrate Class Identification Chain
Once confirmed as Vertebrata, ask these questions in order:
- Skeleton? Cartilaginous = Cyclostomata or Chondrichthyes → check if jawless (Cyclo) or jawed (Chondri)
- Bony + scales? Cycloid/Ctenoid = Osteichthyes (bony fish)
- Dual habitat + moist skin? = Amphibia
- Dry scales + 3 chambers (no complete septum)? = Reptilia
- Feathers? = Aves (only birds have feathers — no exceptions)
- Hair + mammary glands? = Mammalia
The fastest shortcuts:
- Feathers → immediately Aves (100% unique to birds)
- Mammary glands → immediately Mammalia
- Placoid scales → immediately Chondrichthyes
- Swim bladder → immediately Osteichthyes
- Moist glandular skin + cutaneous respiration → immediately Amphibia
