The Systematic Elimination Method

When NEET gives you a set of features and asks you to identify the phylum or class, follow this decision tree:

Vertebrate Class Identification Chain

Once confirmed as Vertebrata, ask these questions in order:

  1. Skeleton? Cartilaginous = Cyclostomata or Chondrichthyes → check if jawless (Cyclo) or jawed (Chondri)
  2. Bony + scales? Cycloid/Ctenoid = Osteichthyes (bony fish)
  3. Dual habitat + moist skin? = Amphibia
  4. Dry scales + 3 chambers (no complete septum)? = Reptilia
  5. Feathers? = Aves (only birds have feathers — no exceptions)
  6. Hair + mammary glands? = Mammalia

The fastest shortcuts:

  • Feathers → immediately Aves (100% unique to birds)
  • Mammary glands → immediately Mammalia
  • Placoid scales → immediately Chondrichthyes
  • Swim bladder → immediately Osteichthyes
  • Moist glandular skin + cutaneous respiration → immediately Amphibia
