Misconceptions Note: 15+ Common Mistakes in ECO-01

Misconception 1: "The pyramid of energy can be inverted in aquatic ecosystems like the pyramid of biomass." Correct: Pyramid of energy is ALWAYS upright — thermodynamic law, no exceptions. Only biomass (aquatic) and numbers (tree ecosystem) can be inverted.

Misconception 2: "Aestivation is dormancy in winter (cold), hibernation is in summer (heat)." Correct: REVERSED. Aestivation = summer heat/drought; Hibernation = winter cold. Remember: "Aestivation = August heat."

Misconception 3: "The phosphorus cycle is similar to the carbon and nitrogen cycles because it has a gaseous phase." Correct: Phosphorus has NO gaseous phase. It is a purely sedimentary cycle. Only carbon (CO2CO_{2}) and nitrogen (N2N_{2}) have atmospheric gaseous forms.

Misconception 4: "NPP > GPP because net includes more processes." Correct: NPP = GPP - Respiration. NPP is ALWAYS LESS than GPP. "Net" means what remains after subtracting the producer's own respiratory use.

Misconception 5: "Gause's principle means no two species can ever coexist in the same habitat." Correct: They cannot occupy the same NICHE (same resource + same habitat simultaneously). Species in the same habitat but using different niches CAN coexist through resource partitioning.

Misconception 6: "Mosses are the pioneer species in primary succession on bare rock." Correct: CRUSTOSE LICHENS are the pioneer species. Mosses come second, after lichens create a thin soil layer. Lichens tolerate bare rock; mosses require some soil moisture retention.

Misconception 7: "Brood parasitism (cuckoo-crow) is commensalism because the crow isn't obviously harmed." Correct: Cuckoo-crow is PARASITISM (+/-). The crow IS harmed — it expends energy, food, and time raising another species' offspring (often at the expense of its own). The harm may be subtle but is real.

Misconception 8: "Penicillium benefits from inhibiting Staphylococcus because it gets more resources." Correct: Amensalism (-/0) — Penicillium is truly unaffected (0). The inhibition is a byproduct of Penicillium's metabolism, not a competitive strategy. Penicillium gains nothing directly from Staphylococcus's inhibition.

Misconception 9: "The detritus food chain (DFC) is less important than the grazing food chain (GFC)." Correct: In most terrestrial ecosystems, the DFC handles a LARGER proportion of energy than the GFC. Most plant material is not consumed while alive — it falls as dead litter and enters the detritus pathway.

Misconception 10: "Secondary succession always results in the same climax community as primary succession." Correct: The climax community is determined by CLIMATE, not the type of succession. Both primary and secondary succession in the same climatic region converge on the same climax community type.

Misconception 11: "Carrying capacity (K) is where growth rate is maximum." Correct: At K, growth rate = 0 (population has stopped growing, not at maximum). Maximum growth rate is at N = K/2 (inflection point). Confusing "maximum population" with "maximum growth rate" is a common error.

Misconception 12: "Competition always leads to extinction of one species." Correct: Competition COULD lead to exclusion (Gause's principle) in identical niches, but resource partitioning allows long-term coexistence. In real ecosystems, species partition resources and coexist.

Misconception 13: "All food chains in an ecosystem are grazing food chains." Correct: All ecosystems have BOTH grazing food chains (from living plants) AND detritus food chains (from dead organic matter). Both operate simultaneously, often interconnected.

Misconception 14: "The ocean has low productivity because it covers 71% of Earth's surface and CO2CO_{2} is diluted." Correct: Ocean has low NPP because it is NUTRIENT-POOR (nitrogen, phosphorus limiting), not because CO2CO_{2} is diluted. The 71% figure refers to carbon storage (CO2CO_{2} dissolved), not productivity limitation.

Misconception 15: "Age pyramids only show current population size, not future trends." Correct: Age pyramids show CURRENT AGE DISTRIBUTION which PREDICTS future population trends: broad base = expanding (future growth expected); narrow base = declining (future decrease expected); uniform = stable.

Misconception 16: "Mycorrhiza is a form of parasitism because fungi live inside plant roots." Correct: Mycorrhiza is MUTUALISM (+/+) — the fungal hyphae increase mineral (especially phosphorus) and water absorption for the plant; the plant provides carbohydrates (sugars) to the fungus. Both benefit.
