Systematic Misconception Analysis
Misconception 1: "Ovulation releases a mature egg." Correction: Ovulation releases a secondary oocyte (arrested at metaphase II), NOT a mature ovum.
Misconception 2: "Fertilization and conception are the same as implantation." Correction: Fertilization (zygote formation) occurs in the ampulla on day 14; implantation occurs in the endometrium on day 20–21.
Misconception 3: "More sperm = one fertilizes the egg; others help by surrounding it." Correction: Only one sperm fertilizes the egg. The cortical reaction immediately blocks all others — additional sperm are not needed or beneficial.
Misconception 4: "The placenta produces FSH and LH." Correction: The placenta produces hCG, hPL, estrogen, and progesterone. FSH and LH are produced exclusively by the anterior pituitary.
Misconception 5: "Oogenesis produces 4 cells like spermatogenesis." Correction: Oogenesis produces 1 ovum + 2–3 polar bodies (not 4 functional cells). Unequal cytokinesis preserves cytoplasm in the ovum.
Misconception 6: "The isthmus is the fertilization site." Correction: The ampulla is the fertilization site. The isthmus is the narrow region connecting the fallopian tube to the uterus.
Misconception 7: "LH maintains the corpus luteum throughout pregnancy." Correction: In early pregnancy, hCG (not LH) maintains the corpus luteum. After the luteal-placental shift (~weeks 8–10), neither is needed as the placenta self-sustains.
Misconception 8: "High progesterone causes menstruation." Correction: FALLING progesterone (when corpus luteum degenerates without hCG) triggers menstruation.
Misconception 9: "Spermatogenesis starts in fetal life like oogenesis." Correction: Spermatogenesis starts at puberty. Oogenesis begins in fetal life.
Misconception 10: "Sertoli cells secrete testosterone." Correction: Leydig cells (interstitial cells, outside seminiferous tubules) secrete testosterone. Sertoli cells secrete inhibin, ABP, and provide structural support.
Misconception 11: "Oxytocin produces milk." Correction: Prolactin produces (synthesizes) milk; oxytocin ejects (releases) milk.
Misconception 12: "Pregnancy tests detect progesterone." Correction: Pregnancy tests detect hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), not progesterone.
Misconception 13: "The inner cell mass forms the placenta." Correction: The trophoblast forms the placenta. The inner cell mass (ICM) forms the embryo.
Misconception 14: "Human pregnancy lasts 9 months = 40 weeks from fertilization." Correction: ~38 weeks (266 days) from fertilization, or 40 weeks from the last menstrual period (LMP). The 2-week difference accounts for the time before ovulation/fertilization.
Misconception 15: "The menstrual cycle is always exactly 28 days." Correction: 28 days is the average/standard cycle length. Actual cycles range from 21–35 days because the follicular phase length varies. The luteal phase is relatively constant at ~14 days.
Misconception 16: "A sperm can directly enter the egg without any enzyme." Correction: The sperm must first complete the acrosomal reaction — releasing hyaluronidase and acrosin to digest through the zona pellucida — before the sperm membrane can fuse with the egg membrane.
