Rules in order: (1) Cation named first regardless of complexity. (2) Ligands named alphabetically before metal, ignoring multiplying prefixes. (3) Anionic ligands get -o suffix (chlorido, cyanido, hydroxido, sulphato). (4) Neutral ligands keep their names except: H2O = aqua, NH3 = ammine, CO = carbonyl, NO = nitrosyl. (5) Use di/tri/tetra for simple ligands; bis/tris/tetrakis for ligands with complex names (e.g., bis(ethylenediamine)). (6) Oxidation state in Roman numerals in parentheses. (7) Anionic complex: metal gets -ate suffix with Latin name where applicable (ferrate, cuprate, argentate, aurate, plumbate, stannate).
