f^(-1) exists only when f is bijective. Method: set y = f(x), solve for x = f^(-1)(y). Properties: f^(-1)(f(x)) = x for all x in domain of f, and f(f^(-1)(y)) = y for all y in range of f. The graph of f^(-1) is the reflection of the graph of f across the line y = x.
