8 High-Frequency NEET Errors
Error 1: AVN as pacemaker
- WRONG: "AVN is the pacemaker of the heart"
- CORRECT: SAN is the primary pacemaker (70-75 bpm). AVN is a relay/delay station (secondary pacemaker at 40-60 bpm only if SAN fails)
- Why students err: AVN sounds important; students know it's "in the AV region" and confuse this with initiating
Error 2: QRS = ventricular contraction
- WRONG: "QRS complex represents ventricular contraction"
- CORRECT: QRS = ventricular DEPOLARIZATION (electrical event). Ventricular contraction (mechanical) follows depolarization
- Why students err: confusing electrical events (ECG records) with mechanical events (what the heart does)
Error 3: Pulmonary arteries carry oxygenated blood
- WRONG: "Pulmonary arteries carry oxygenated blood (because arteries carry oxygenated blood)"
- CORRECT: Pulmonary arteries carry DEOXYGENATED blood from right ventricle to lungs — the exception
- Why students err: applying the general rule "arteries = oxygenated" to all arteries
Error 4: RBCs formed in spleen
- WRONG: "RBCs are formed in the spleen"
- CORRECT: RBCs are FORMED in red bone marrow. Spleen is the graveyard (DESTRUCTION site)
- Why students err: spleen = "graveyard" is such a strong association that some reverse formation/destruction sites
Error 5: AB = universal donor
- WRONG: "AB is the universal donor because it has both antigens"
- CORRECT: AB is the universal RECIPIENT. O is the universal DONOR (no antigens = nothing for recipient antibodies to attack)
- Why students err: AB "fits all" makes people think it can give to all; they confuse donor/recipient roles
Error 6: Atrial repolarization = Ta wave visible on ECG
- WRONG: "Atrial repolarization appears as a separate small wave after the P wave"
- CORRECT: Atrial repolarization is MASKED by the QRS complex. It occurs simultaneously with ventricular depolarization
- Why students err: logically expect a visible wave for every electrical event
Error 7: First pregnancy causes erythroblastosis fetalis
- WRONG: "Erythroblastosis fetalis is equally likely in the first and subsequent pregnancies"
- CORRECT: First Rh+ pregnancy sensitizes the mother; the DISEASE occurs in second or later pregnancies
- Why students err: knowing the condition is Rh-related without understanding the sensitization timeline
Error 8: Basophils = phagocytosis
- WRONG: "Basophils perform phagocytosis"
- CORRECT: NEUTROPHILS and monocytes/macrophages perform phagocytosis. Basophils SECRETE histamine and heparin
- Why students err: confusing the defensive function of neutrophils with basophils (both start with "B" sounds)
