Reading the Diagram
- Ground state: n=1 (most negative energy, most stable)
- Ionization: energy to reach n=∞ = || = 13.6 eV for H
- Lyman series: all transitions to n=1 (upward arrows = absorption; downward = emission)
- Balmer series: all transitions to n=2
- Paschen series: all transitions to n=3
Energy Gap Pattern
The gap between levels gets SMALLER as n increases: →{2} > →{3} > →_{4}... This means the first line of each series has the MAXIMUM wavelength.
