Reading the Diagram

  • Ground state: n=1 (most negative energy, most stable)
  • Ionization: energy to reach n=∞ = |E1E_{1}| = 13.6 eV for H
  • Lyman series: all transitions to n=1 (upward arrows = absorption; downward = emission)
  • Balmer series: all transitions to n=2
  • Paschen series: all transitions to n=3

Energy Gap Pattern

The gap between levels gets SMALLER as n increases: E1E_{1}{2} > E2E_{2}{3} > E3E_{3}→_{4}... This means the first line of each series has the MAXIMUM wavelength.
