Dehydration and Oxidation — Process Flow

Dehydration of Alcohols (Saytzeff's Rule):

3° ROH --[conc. $H_{2}SO_{4}$, 443 K]--> More substituted alkene (major)
2° ROH --[conc. $H_{2}SO_{4}$, 443 K]--> Alkene
1° ROH --[conc. $H_{2}SO_{4}$, 443 K]--> Alkene (slowest)
Ease of dehydration: 3° > 2° > 1°

Oxidation Ladder:

Key Rule: PCC stops at aldehyde. KMnO4KMnO_{4}/K2Cr2O7K_{2}Cr_{2}O_{7} go all the way to carboxylic acid from 1° alcohol.
